The
world-renowned Great Wall, a symbol of ancient
Chinese civilisation, has stood grandly in the
land of China for more than 2,000 years. Stretching
from the coast of the Bohai Bay in the east
and terminating at Jiayu Pass in the west, it
serpentines among lofty mountains for 12,700
li, or 6,350 kilometres, hence its Chinese name
Wanlichangcheng (Ten-Thousand-li-long Wall).
It is said to be one of the only two human engineering
projects visible by astronauts from space with
the naked eye. |

Ming
Tombs |

Chang Ling is the first tomb
built in the Ming Tombs. Yong Lee was the first
Ming Emperor to be buried in the sacred area
(1424). The main structure above ground of Chang
Ling is the Hall of Eminent Favours, a twin-roofed
building on a three-tiered white marble terrace
with balustrades all around. |

The
Tiananmen Square in the centre of Beijing is
said to be the biggest square in the world.
It is 880 metres from north to south, and 500
meters from east to west, with a total area
of 440,000 square metres and can hold one million
people. The Tiananmen Rostrum is located in
its northern part, the Monument to the People’s
Heroes dominates the centre, the Great Hall
of the People and the National Museum to its
east and west, and the Chairman Mao Memorial
Hall and the Qianmen gate are located in the
south of the square. |

Forbidden
City Museum |

Situated in the centre of Beijing,
the Forbidden City used to be the imperial palace
of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Until 1924,
when the last emperor in China was driven out
of the Inner Court, 14 emperors of the Ming
dynasty and 10 emperors of the Qing dynasty
had reigned within its walls. About 500 years
being the imperial palace, it houses numerous
rare treasures and curiosities. |

Palace is one of China’s largest and best-preserved
imperial gardens. It consists mainly of Kunming
Lake and the Longevity Hill dotted with halls
and pavilions. Places of interest in the garden
include the Long Corridor of 728 meters, the
Pavilion of Buddha’s Fragrance on top
of Longevity Hill, the Bronze Pavilion cast
in 207 tons of metal, the Marble Boat mooring
forever by the lakeshore, Suzhou Street flanked
by bric-a-brac shops, the Garden of Harmonious
Interest, the Seventeen-Arch bridge, the Bronze
Ox on guard by the waters, and the Spring Pavilion
built on the lake. |
